After the Chicago Bulls pulled off an impressive Derrick Rose night at the United Center, the Chicago Bears went into Green Bay and took down the Packers.

Was the first weekend of 2025 better than any weekend in 2024!?

The Chicago Bulls continue their journey to no man’s land against the San Antonio Spurs this evening. Splitting a mini-series with the Denver Nuggets over their last two games, the Spurs have signaled multiple times this season that they are ready to take the next step. They currently sit 18-17 on the season and hold a Top 13 defensive rating. Of course, Victor Wembanyama is the primary reason for the team’s steady play. He leads the league in total blocks with 116. The next closest players are Anthony Davis and Walker Kessler, who are tied with 71 apiece. The Spurs’ defense is a staggering -10.5 when Wembanyama is on the floor this season, which Cleaning the Glass ranks inside the league’s 98th percentile. No one in the league single-handedly disrupts an opposing offense more than the seven-foot-four extraterrestrial. Wembanyama has also taken a significant step in the right direction on the other side of the ball. The 21-year-old is averaging a career-high 25.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. He’s also shooting 35.4 percent from long range on roughly 9.3 attempts per game! Everyone knew Wemby would take the league by storm, but that doesn’t take away from how special it has been to watch him do it. Wembanyama is still young enough where the right frontcourt talent can make things tough on him. Unfortunately, I’m not sure the Bulls have that talent. Nikola Vucevic’s strength could be an asset at times on the offensive end and on the glass, while Jalen Smith at least has the athleticism to keep up with Wembanyama along the perimeter. But let’s not forget the Bulls give up the most points in the paint per game for a reason! If Wembanyama reads the scouting report, he will see this is a game where he can absolutely feast inside. Indeed, if you’re the Bulls, your best hope might be to sag off him and hope he gets trigger-happy from downtown. For what it’s worth, the Bulls did beat the Spurs in their last meeting 139-124, but Wembanyama wasn’t on the floor. Keldon Johnson also found tons of success attacking Chicago off the dribble and went 10-13 at the rim and 5-8 from the free-throw line. To be sure, this isn’t a particularly efficient Spurs offense, but they are a well-coached team and will look to spam the Bulls’ greatest weakness. They also move the ball tremendously well, averaging the league’s highest AST percentage. While Chris Paul is surely a big part of that, they have taken on an unselfish identity this season that will keep this Bulls team on a swivel.

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) January 6, 2025 The good news for the Bulls is that their offense has gotten back on track over the last handful of games. Not only are they 3-2 in their last five contests, but they have held the league’s 6th-highest effective field goal percentage. This comes after a tough seven-game stretch in December where they shot only 42.4 percent from the field. At least part of this turnaround can be directly attributed to the re-emergence of Coby White. After a brutally long shooting slump, White has averaged 23.6 points on 50.6 percent shooting from the field and 43.9 percent shooting from three over his last five games. He looks A LOT more like the player we watched breakout last night. Ayo Dosunmu and Torrey Craig remain out for tonight’s game, per the latest injury report. Craig is dealing with a lower leg injury, while Dosunmu continues to work his way back from a calf strain. The good news is that Dosunmu’s 10-day re-evaluation period arrives after tonight’s game. Considering he’ll likely need time to ramp back up, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him sidelined for Wednesday’s meeting with the Pacers. But could he return by Friday’s battle with the Wizards/ © Scott Wachter-Imagn Images If I’m Matas Buzelis, I’m making this photo my phone background immediately and never changing it …

— Bleacher Nation Bulls (@BN_Bulls) January 6, 2025 The Chicago Bulls social team asked players for one word to describe Derrick Rose. Every choice felt fitting, but I have to give the cookie to Nikola Vucevic. “I’d say true. He stayed true to himself,” Vucevic said.

One word you would use to describe Derrick Rose? ?? pic.twitter.com/5lLZTXHmLI
