They claim that an auto detailing company can clean them using a mild abrasive compound or high-grit sandpaper to remove the outer layer of film on the lens.
They’ll even polish the lens to a like-new shine and apply a protective coating to reduce future degradation.
However, the average cost of a headlight cleaning service and restoration can be between $100 to $150 per pair of headlights.
Headlights with severe fogginess may even cost up to $200 or more per pair.
But cloudy and dirty lights can be easily restored without forking out on the professionals – if you have the right know-how.
Car experts at the Kansas-based outlet Wichita Eagle revealed their easy set-by-step guide to their headlight fix, using a headlight restoration kit, masking tape, microfiber cleaning cloths, a plastic spray bottle and vinyl gloves.
Firstly, before attempting to remove the oxidation from the headlights, drivers need to make sure the surface is clean by simply washing and drying them with a microfiber towel.
Then, prep the surface by placing masking tape around the headlights to keep any residue from the products off the paint.
After doing this, the headlights can be wiped with the oxidation remover that’s provided in the kit.
It’s worth noting that the cloth will begin to have a yellow color to it as the oxidation is removed from the headlight.
Next, the headlight can be rubbed with the sanding pad provided, although a buffer can be used here as well.
Then the headlight can be sprayed with water to remove the residue caused by the sanding and then dried, before a restorer is applied to the headlights.
When all of that is done, the vehicle can be left to dry for a minimum of one hour.
However, Wichita Eagle added that, if the headlights still aren’t clear, then there may be a bigger issue that may require the headlights to be professionally repaired or replaced.
