Bill Belichick appears to have the guy he wants to be his offensive coordinator as he takes over at North Carolina, with sources telling CBS Sports and 247Sports that Freddie Kitchens will be Belichick’s choice.
The 50-year-old Kitchens has been the tight ends coach and running game coordinator at UNC for the past 2 years, and he also was the interim head coach when Mack Brown was fired late in the 2024 season. Kitchens coached the Tar Heels in last Saturday’s Fenway Bowl in Boston, which North Carolina lost to UConn, 27-14.

— Matt Zenitz (@mzenitz) December 31, 2024Kitchens was a quarterback at Alabama from 1993-97 and almost immediately after started his coaching career. Among his many stops, Kitchens was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, just like Belichick, going 6-10 in his one and only season in 2019. Kitchens was an assistant for the Browns the year before that, and has also been an assistant with the Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants.
Perhaps Kitchens’ wealth of experience coaching at the NFL level is what has attracted Belichick to have Kitchens run his offense as he tries to get the Tar Heels out of mediocrity in 2025 and beyond. North Carolina finished at 6-7 after the bowl loss to UConn.
Kitchens was also a senior analyst at South Carolina in 2022 before heading to North Carolina as an assistant.
