The Los Angeles Lakers have made a move!

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Brooklyn Nets will send Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton to the Lakers in exchange for D’Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis, and three second-round picks. The deal will bring Los Angeles further below the second tax apron, slightly increasing their flexibility ahead of the 2025 NBA Trade Deadline.

Lakers Add Wing Depth

While a little more financial wiggle room is nice, Dorian Finney-Smith serves as the real asset for the Lakers. One of the top 3-and-D role players on the market, Finney-Smith will offer Los Angeles some much-needed defensive length and versatility along the perimeter. He will also provide a boost behind the arc. Finney-Smith is shooting a career-high 43.5 percent from long range on 5.4 attempts per game. Meanwhile, the Lakers are averaging the second-fewest three-point attempts a night and converting at just 35.3 percent, which ranks 18th in the NBA.

For as much sense as Finney-Smith makes for LA, the deal still comes as a surprise. Some speculated that Los Angeles could be in the hunt for an even bigger addition. Additionally, the Memphis Grizzlies were the team most closely linked to Finney-Smith in recent days. The two sides were said to be in active discussions as recently as Saturday.

This now marks the second deal for the Brooklyn Nets, who are expected to be in full sell mode ahead of the deadline. They had previously sent out Dennis Schroder in a trade with the Golden State Warriors. As for the Lakers, will this be all they do in the coming weeks? The team currently sits 18-13 and 5th in the Western Conference. While that seems like a good spot to be, only 2.0 games separate No. 10 and No. 5 as of today.

Lastly, those three second-round picks for Finney-Smith feel more than noteworthy as we begin to analyze the rest of the market. Could this tell us what the Bulls may get in exchange for their veteran assets? While adding a player like Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic would certainly be a bigger upgrade than Dorian Finney-Smith, the money involved will play a key factor.
