EL PASO, Texas — Allen Duane Phillips, 84, formerly of Southington, passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024.
He was born Jan. 25, 1940, in Warren, a son of the late Bernard J. Phillips and the late Emma Heckathorn Phillips.
He was a 1958 graduate of Chalker High School. He attended Austin Peabody in Nashville, Tennessee, and Millsaps College in Mississippi, on sports scholarships and later was a graduate of Youngstown State University. He worked as an engineer for Packard Electric in Warren, and after moving to El Paso, Texas, retired after 33 years.
On Sept. 8, 1962, Al married Dolores (Min Young) Phillips, who survives. They were married for 62 years.
Al enjoyed being outside, growing a garden and having a curious dog or child by his side. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in the 1960s playing baseball for the Army. He was a huge Cleveland Indians / Guardians, Browns and Cavaliers fan. He was instrumental in building ball diamonds at Chalker, president of the school board and baseball organization, and he was a coach. He was also involved in the Trumbull County Midnight Riders 4-H horse club with his sons at the fairgrounds.
In El Paso, Al worked at Dos Lagos Golf Course in Anthony, golfing with a group of his favorite people; he enjoyed the golfers’ luncheons every month so much, as well as the art scene and Paws for Love therapy animals. Al was a kind and gentle man who cared deeply about his sons and their families.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores; sons, Randall J. (Lauren) Phillips and Joseph W. (Page) Phillips; grandchildren, Sarah (Easton) Phillips-Johnson, and Zachary, Danny, Austin, Caden and Tanner Phillips; step-grandchildren, Taylor (Paige) Weigel, Zack (Faith) Freeman and Madison Freeman; great-grandchildren, Lyla Phillips Duffney, Sebastian Freeman and baby girl Freeman, on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Taylor; sisters-in-law, Peggy Phillips and Sherril Johnson; along with several loved nieces and nephews.
Al was preceded by his parents, Bernard and Emma; and brothers, Bernard Jr., Arthur N. and infant David Phillips.
