egg recall as the highest risk level by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) underscores critical public health concerns surrounding food safety. The recall, which affects Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised eggs sold at 25 Costco locations in five Southeastern states, was escalated to Class 1 status due to potential Salmonella contamination. This designation indicates a “reasonable probability” that consumption of these eggs could lead to serious illness or death . Specifically, the affected eggs bear Julian code 327 and have a use-by date of January 5, 2025.
Costco stores in the Southeastern United States with the highest risk level of Category 1.
Category 1, the FDA notes on its site, means there is a recall in which there is "a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
Last month, over 10,000 cartons of eggs sold under Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand were voluntarily recalled over concerns they could be contaminated with salmonella, though nobody at the time had been sickened by the potentially foul eggs.
The recall was initiated for 24-count packages of Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised with a UPC of 9661910680.
The recall announcement states that the recall is only for cartons marked with Julian code 327 and a use by date of Jan. 5, 2025.
“No other products are impacted by this recall,” the announcement said.
FDA's precautionary measures reflect an urgent need for consumer awareness regarding foodborne pathogens. Symptoms associated with Salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea—potentially bloody—nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain . Such symptoms can escalate into severe conditions requiring medical intervention.
The proactive steps taken by both the FDA and Costco highlight the importance of vigilance in food safety practices. Consumers are advised to return any affected products for a refund or dispose of them safely . As food recalls become increasingly common due to heightened surveillance and testing protocols within the industry, it is essential for consumers to remain informed about risks associated with their purchases.
