UNION COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — 50-year-old Hattie Sturdivant is currently in custody at the Union County Jail for allegedly stealing at least $200,000 from a man while working at a senior living facility in Mecklenburg County.
"It appears that the two met while she was working in a senior living facility, but that relationship there was short-lived, and he actually began living with Ms. Sturdivant, and she was supposed to be his caretaker," said Union County Sheriff's Office Lt. James Maye.
He says the victim and Sturdivant lived in an Indian Trail apartment complex. Eventually, the victim called authorities asking for help to be taken to another location because he was unhappy with where he was living.
When investigators looked deeper into his case, they found Sturdivant allegedly stole at least $200,000 from him.

"Just various transactions, online transactions, and personal purchases, stores, everything ranging from basic products to children's toys to online subscription type things," said Lt. Maye.
Investigators found the suspect had two other victims she allegedly stole money from who were elderly women.
Sturdivant sits in jail with 12 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, 12 counts of exploitation of an elder, and financial transaction card fraud.
"Financial crimes are very arduous investigations. They take a really long time to work. So we're just thankful that Ms. Sturdivant is in jail on a million-dollar bond and that she's not able to do this to anyone else," Lt. Maye said.
Authorities are working to determine how much money she allegedly took from the victims. Now, investigators are asking the public to check on their vulnerable loved ones.
"Ms. Sturdivant posed as a person who would offer that level of care and just failed to provide that and instead defrauded these elderly folks out of their money. So it's always important to especially elderly family members who may be experiencing cognitive disorders such as dementia, Alzheimer's, something like that, that a trusted family member or family members gain access to their elderly loved ones accounts to make sure that they can just be monitored," Lt. Maye said.
