Rylie Mills is not being ruled out for Notre Dame’s College Football Playoff clash with Georgia, a significant boost for the Fighting Irish in the Sugar Bowl.
“There is optimism,” Freeman told ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt after Friday’s game. “I won’t get into details on what they told me, but it sounds like it’s not season-ending. We just gotta get him right here in the next 10-11 days and get him ready for this upcoming contest down in New Orleans.”
In the 3rd quarter of Notre Dame’s win over Indiana in the first round of the College Football Playoff, Mills had to be helped off the field after he was holding his right knee. ESPN’s Molly McGrath noted that the standout defensive lineman was walking with a noticeable limp on the sideline and made to wear a brace on his knee by the Notre Dame medical staff.
Mills’ status will be closely watched for Notre Dame’s Sugar Bowl matchup with Georgia in the CFP quarterfinals. The super senior is Notre Dame’s leader in tackles for loss (8.5) and sacks (7.5). He had 2 tackles in the Indiana game before his exit, bringing his season total to 37.
As Freeman noted, Mills has over a week to heal before the showdown with the Bulldogs. The Sugar Bowl is set for Jan. 1 in New Orleans.
