Jaylon Johnson is Questionable to Play in Week 16 vs. Lions ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The final Chicago Bears injury report of the week is out, and it is a mixed bag as the team heads into the weekend ahead of its upcoming matchup against the Detroit Lions.

Here is the latest:

Cornerback Jaylon Johnson pops up on the injury report with a DNP next to his name because of an illness. Not practicing on Friday puts Johnson’s status for Sunday’s game against the Lions in question. Illnesses are tricky, particularly this time of year. I will hold out hope that Johnson is well enough to play in Week 16. But if he can’t give it a go (or is not able to be at full strength), at least we can spin it as an opportunity for Tyrique Stevenson and Terell Smith to get an extended run against tough competition. Maybe this will bring the best out of the second-year cornerbacks. Now that we have the bad stuff out of the way, we can turn to some encouraging news. For starters, Braxton Jones was a full participant for a second consecutive practice. Chicago’s starting left tackle is still listed as questionable for the game against Detroit, but being listed as questionable on a Friday before a Sunday noon kickoff is better than the alternative of already being ruled out. Speaking of already being out of the question, offensive lineman Ryan Bates will miss another game while in concussion protocol. This has been a lost year for Bates, whose injuries have kept him off the playing field for most of this season. Left guard Teven Jenkins saw an upgrade on the Friday injury report. Jenkins missed practices on Wednesday and Thursday before returning to the practice field for Friday’s session. Jenkins has missed only one game due to injury this season, which is remarkable when you consider that he has missed chunks of games due to injuries that happened during games this year. Where the Bears turn if Jenkins can’t play is uncertain. Would this team give Kiran Amegadjie a shot at left guard to see what it has in its 2024 third-round rookie? Having limited participation on Friday is better than having no participation. And while I would love to have Dexter back in the lineup to provide some resistance against the high-flying Lions offense, I hope the Bears don’t rush him back. Running back Roschon Johnson (concussion) and defensive lineman Darrell Taylor (shoulder) were both full participants on Friday. Neither player has a game-day status designation attached to their name, which means they are cleared to be a full go against the Lions. Phew.

GAME PREVIEW: Bears-Lions Week 16

Meanwhile, running back Travis Homer entered the injury report for the first time this week. Homer was limited with a hamstring injury and is doubtful to play on Sunday. If Homer is unavailable, I would expect the team to elevate Darrynton Evans from the practice squad to fill a roster spot.

All things considered, it looks like things are trending in the right direction for the Bears. Unfortunately, the players listed as questionable to play are some heavy hitters. I do not want to see a Chicago secondary without Jaylon Johnson square up against a healthy unit of Detroit Lions wide receivers. And while it is encouraging to see Gervon Dexter Sr. and Teven Jenkins get upgraded on the Friday injury report, I worry about what both sides of the trenches will look like if either (or both) misses Sunday’s contest.
