Steve Sarkisian reacts to ruling in Diego Pavia’s eligibility case: ‘I totally disagree with it’ ...Middle East

Steve Sarkisian is not on board with JUCO years not counting against NCAA eligibility.

On Wednesday, Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia was granted a motion for a preliminary injunction in his suit against the NCAA to be eligible for 2025. Pavia is arguing that the NCAA’s eligibility rules counting JUCO seasons among the 4 seasons violate antitrust laws as it relates to NIL opportunities.

The court’s decision only impacts Pavia, as he sued only on the grounds of his own eligibility. It sets a precedent, though, and could potentially lead to more suits if the NCAA does not address eligibility for all JUCO athletes.

The Pavia news reached well beyond the Vanderbilt football orbit. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian was asked for his thoughts during a Thursday media opportunity and voiced his disapproval.

“I totally disagree,” Sarkisian said to begin his answer, mistakenly calling it an “NCAA determination.”

Texas beat reporter Joshua Newman sought Sarkisian’s take on the situation because of the Longhorn coach’s background. As an athlete, Sarkisian first played baseball at USC in 1992. He then transferred to El Camino, a community college in Los Angeles County. It was there he decided to give football another try, and played 2 seasons. He would then transfer to BYU, playing 2 seasons of NCAA football before playing professionally in the CFL with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Sarkisian feels starting out at JUCO is a choice, and should not lead to NCAA football getting older.

“We chose to go to junior college football,” the Texas coach said in his response. “That’s where we wanted to start and play our careers. So, I don’t understand it at all. We’re going to have guys 28-29 years old playing college football. What’s the point? I don’t get it. I don’t understand it. I totally disagree with it.”

Sarkisian’s Longhorns defeated Pavia and the Commodores 27-24 in October.

When asked by @Joshua_Newman about the decision to allow Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia an additional year, Steve Sarkisian was pretty straight forward:"I totally disagree…we're going to have guys 28-29 years old playing college football"#HookEm | #Texas pic.twitter.com/9yTFXZXkCd
