Monaco, PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma sustained a serious facial injury that has drawn significant attention. The incident occurred when Donnarumma collided with Monaco defender Wilfried Singo while attempting to make a save, resulting in deep lacerations to his face . This unfortunate event transpired in the 22nd minute of the game, necessitating his immediate substitution as he left the field with visible blood on his face. The severity of the injury required ten staples to close the wounds, underscoring its seriousness .

The 25-year-old required medical attention following the collision, but was ultimately forced off in the 22nd minute to be replaced by Matvei Safonov.

Donnarumma walked off the pitch after being treated by PSG's medical staff.

'Sending our best wishes to Gigio, who suffered a serious facial injury and had to leave the match in the first half,' PSG wrote on social media.

The former AC Milan keeper was fitted with staples after suffering several nasty cuts and will be sporting a black eye for some time. PSG expect to be without the Euro 2020 winner for their final fixture of the calendar year, with an update on their official website reading: “Victim of facial trauma with multiple wounds, Gianluigi Donnarumma will return to Paris with the team. He will undergo medical examinations and will have to remain inactive for several days.”

PSG would receive another scare later as Safonov's arm was stamped on by Lamine Camara, which clearly rips the replacement goalkeeper's greens sleeve he's wearing. Just like the earlier incident, Camara was on a yellow card at the time but was not booked a second time.

With Donnarumma out injured and PSG's opponents still with 11 players on the pitch, Monaco would score twice shortly after halftime to take a 2-1 lead, but PSG managed a late comeback as Goncalo Ramos and Ousmane Dembele combined for three goals to secure a 4-2 win.

The aftermath of this collision raises questions regarding player safety and officiating standards in high-stakes matches. Despite the gravity of Donnarumma's injury, Singo did not receive any disciplinary action beyond an apology. Such decisions may prompt discussions about how referees assess dangerous plays and whether stricter penalties are warranted for actions leading to severe injuries. As PSG ultimately triumphed over Monaco with a score of 4-2, concerns linger about Donnarumma's recovery and potential absence from upcoming fixtures .
