Travis Hunter has been named the 79th Heisman Trophy winner.
It was a historic night in New York City on Saturday, as Colorado’s two-way star was crowned as the most outstanding player in college football. Charles Woodson (1997) was the last defensive player to win the Heisman. Only 2 wide receivers have won the Heisman since 1990. Hunter won the Heisman on Saturday night for his ability to play both positions at the highest level.
Hunter was named the Walter Camp Player of the Year. He also won the Bednarik Award as the best defensive player and the Biletnikoff Award as the best pass-catcher. He is Colorado’s second-ever Heisman winner, joining running back Rashaan Salaam (1994). Hunter was named a first-team selection on the Camp All-America team on offense and defense earlier this week. In the 135 years of the Camp All-America team, he is the only player to be named on both sides of the ball.
Defensively, Hunter played 688 snaps and finished with 4 interceptions and 11 pass breakups on the season. Hunter closed out the regular season with a 91.1 coverage grade from PFF. He allowed just 22 catches for 205 yards and one touchdown while giving up an FBS-low six first downs.
Offensively, Hunter was just as productive, playing 672 snaps while finishing the regular season with 92 receptions and 14 touchdowns (both Big 12-leading marks). He hauled in 1,152 yards. He also led the FBS with 21 receptions of 20 yards or longer and had 396 yards after the catch and 185 after contact.
