Minister Michel Barnier marks a significant moment in French politics, resulting in the first government collapse of this nature since 1962. The vote, which concluded with a tally of 331-288, not only signifies a profound political shift but also poses substantial challenges for President Emmanuel Macron. Appointed just 91 days prior after inconclusive elections, Barnier's tenure was abruptly curtailed due to his controversial proposed budget for 2025, which alienated both left-wing and right-wing factions within the National Assembly .
Michel Barnier's minority government was ousted by the vote supported by parties on the left and right after he pushed a controversial social security component of his budget through parliament without support.
France's parliament is deeply divided, and with no fresh elections permitted until July 2025, the chances of they key EU member state achieving a stable government look slim.
Emmanuel Macron names new leadership. Barnier is set to formally submit his resignation to Macron on Thursday morning, according to French media.
Choosing a successor will prove a delicate task, with the increasingly vulnerable president forced to appease lawmakers on both extremes of French politics.
Macron had appointed Barnier to lead a minority government after a snap election, called by the president in the summer, split France’s parliament into three factions, each well short of a majority.
In an interview with French broadcaster TF1 on Wednesday, Le Pen said there was "no other solution" than to remove Barnier.
Asked about the French president's prospects, she replied: "I am not asking for the resignation of Emmanuel Macron."
However, Le Pen added that "if we do not respect the voice of voters and show respect for political forces and respect for elections", then pressure on the president will "obviously be stronger and stronger".
The political upheaval could hardly come at a worse time for Europe, which is in dire need of leadership to confront challenges ranging from the return of Donald Trump to the conflict in Ukraine and a potential trade war with China. Germany, the other half of the engine that powers the continent, is ill-equipped to take the reins while struggling with its own political mess and a sputtering economy.
