Cold Weather Payments activated in 18 locations as the UK prepares for snow—here’s how to check if you qualify for £25 this week

United Kingdom braces for impending snowfall, the Cold Weather Payments scheme has been activated in 18 locations, providing vital support to eligible individuals. This government initiative offers a £25 payment during periods of extreme cold, specifically when temperatures drop to 0°C or below for seven consecutive days. The scheme aims to assist vulnerable populations, including older adults and families with young children or disabilities.

Up to 15cm of snow is expected to fall in some parts of the country as the Met Office issues several yellow weather alerts for snow and ice.

Despite changes being made to Winter Fuel Payment eligibility in September, thousands of people still have the chance to get payments to help them heat their homes during cold periods.

Not all those receiving these benefits will automatically receive a Cold Weather Payment. There are a number of factors which will determine whether a payment will be made and full details of those eligible can be found on GOV.UK.

The payments are triggered if average temperatures in an area have been recorded at, or are forecast to be, below freezing for seven consecutive days. Recipients are automatically paid £25 for each 7 day period of cold weather running across the winter period between 1 November 2024 and 31 March 2025.

Eligibility for Cold Weather Payments is contingent upon receiving certain benefits such as Pension Credit or Universal Credit. The criteria further extend to households with disabled members or children under five years old . This tool allows users to verify if their postcode falls within an activated location and whether they meet the necessary benefit requirements.
