New York State, classifying Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) as an "imminent threat to the public," underscores the urgent need for public health awareness and action. Following the death of a resident in Ulster County, this incident marks the first human case of EEE in New York since 2015 . EEE is a rare but severe mosquito-borne viral infection with a staggering fatality rate of approximately 30%, necessitating immediate preventive measures to mitigate risks associated with mosquito bites.

The Ulster County Department of Health has launched an investigation into the case, which was first confirmed on September 20th by the State Health Department’s Wadsworth Center.

EEE is a rare but serious virus transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Though primarily affecting horses, the virus can infect humans, causing severe brain inflammation, which can be fatal.

The declaration enables the state to assist local governments with EEE prevention and response, such as mosquito spraying efforts.

"Keeping New Yorkers safe is my top priority," Hochul said. "Following the first confirmed human case of EEE, my administration took statewide action to help protect communities – and with today's declaration we're making more state resources available to local departments to support their public health response. We've been informed this patient has passed away from EEE, we extend our sympathies and our hearts go out to their family."

The virus is a rare but serious illness transmitted through bites from infected mosquitoes, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While most cases in humans present no symptoms, those known to occur include fever, muscle fatigue and headache. In severe cases, patients can fall into a coma. It is fatal in about 33% of cases.

In response to this alarming situation, state authorities are mobilizing resources to assist local governments in implementing effective EEE prevention strategies. These include extensive mosquito spraying efforts and public education campaigns urging residents to adopt protective behaviors such as wearing long sleeves and utilizing insect repellent . The absence of a vaccine for EEE further complicates the challenge, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in combating this dangerous virus.
