Reason why Some Social Security recipients won't get benefit checks in September

Americans, providing financial support to retirees, disabled individuals, and survivors. However, there are instances when certain recipients may not receive their benefit checks as expected. One reason why some Social Security recipients might not get their checks in September relates to the timing of payment schedules and the impact of federal holidays on these schedules. The Social Security Administration (SSA) typically distributes benefits on a monthly basis, but specific dates are determined by the recipient's birth date or the type of benefit they receive.

According to the Social Security Administration’s 2024 calendar, many recipients of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will not be receiving a benefit check during the month of September.

Usually, SSI benefit checks are sent out to its recipients on the first of the month; however, September 1 fell on a Sunday this year, so SSI payments for this month were instead sent out on Friday, August 31.

SSA) calendar may not come as much of a surprise to those keeping a close eye on the administration's 2024 timetable, which lays out dates for different types of payments throughout the year. However, for those used to seeing money hit their accounts on the first of the month, the adjustment may still cause some confusion.

Luckily, there is a simple explanation for this that does not include anyone missing out on their needed funds. In other words, it just comes down to the calendar. But with about 7.5 million people receiving SSI benefits in 2024, even a seemingly minor modification can trigger a little uncertainty. Here's what to know about SSI benefits this month.

The new system will start in December with an online application that streamlines the process, according to the agency's statement. A simplified initial application, called the iClaim, will use plan-language questions and will pre-populate questions with answers where possible. The goal is to reduce the time and effort required to complete the form, as well as to speed up claims processing.

"People in our communities who need this crucial safety net deserve the dignity of an application process that is less burdensome and more accessible than what we now have, and we're committed to achieving that vision over the next few years," Martin O'Malley, commissioner of Social Security, said in a statement.

Moving forward, other Social Security recipients can expect their payments in September on the following days:

Wednesday, September 11: Individuals born between the 1st and 10th of the month

Wednesday, September 18: People born between the 11th and 20th of the month

Wednesday, September 25: Recipients born between the 21st and 31st of the month
