Sandra Jaquez is a first-generation Dominican-American who owns Il Sole, an Italian restaurant in Upper Manhattan. Like many in the hospitality industry, she’s been walloped by the pandemic. Business is down 80%, and she’s had to reduce her staff of seven down to just two employees. Thankfully, she was able to work with her landlord, and is now paying half of her pre-pandemic rent. But since the weather has gotten colder, outdoor dining, which had been helping Il Sole stay afloat, has decreased 60%. For the first time in 16 years, Sandra is in debt, and fears that at the current rate, she’ll have to close her doors to customers for good before spring.
