2024 Mexico Presidential Election: Sheinbaum holds irreversible lead in Mexico's presidential race

Cultural by : (PRESSBEE) -

Mexico presidential election rapidly approaches, current Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum has emerged as a frontrunner with an irreversible lead in the race. Sheinbaum's popularity can be attributed to her successful tenure as mayor, where she has implemented progressive policies and initiatives that have garnered widespread support among the Mexican population.

Sheinbaum's strong stance on social issues, such as gender equality and environmental sustainability, has resonated with voters across the country. Her commitment to addressing pressing issues facing Mexico, such as corruption and crime, has also contributed to her commanding lead in the polls.

Mexicans headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in a historic election, overshadowed by violence, that is expected to return the country’s first woman president.

Claudia Sheinbaum from the leftist Morena party and Xochitl Gálvez, from the conservative PAN party, who is representing a coalition of opposition parties.

The third candidate is Jorge Álvarez Máynez, the youngest in the race, who is representing the center-left Citizens’ Movement.

Sunday’s poll is the largest election in the country’s history. More than 98 million voters are registered to cast a ballot in Mexico, and 1.4 million Mexicans are eligible to vote abroad. More than 20,000 positions are set to be filled with an estimated 70,000 candidates vying to become senators, mayors and governors.

In addition to the presidency, voters also cast their ballots for about 20,000 positions in what is the country’s largest-ever election.

Tabasco, Veracruz and the Yucatan.

Just as the upcoming November rematch between Biden and Trump has underscored deep divisions in the U.S., Sunday's election has revealed how severely polarized public opinion is in Mexico over the direction of the country, including its security strategy and how to grow the economy.

Beyond the fight for control of Congress, the race for Mexico City - whose top post is now considered equivalent to a governorship - is also important. Sheinbaum is just the latest of many Mexico City mayors, including López Obrador, who went on to run for president. Governorships in large, populous states such as Veracruz and Jalisco are also drawing interest.

Polls opened at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. (0000 GMT Monday) in most of the country. The first preliminary, partial results are expected by 9 p.m. (0300 GMT Monday) after the last polls in different time zones close.
