Chad Daybell, a former gravedigger turned doomsday author, has been sentenced to death in a triple murder case in Idaho. Daybell was found guilty of the murders of his wife, Tammy Daybell, and two stepchildren, Tylee Ryan and Joshua "JJ" Vallow. The case has captivated the nation with its bizarre details and cult-like beliefs.
The sentencing of Chad Daybell to death marks the end of a long and tumultuous legal battle that has spanned several years. The prosecution presented overwhelming evidence linking Daybell to the murders, including witness testimonies and forensic evidence. The jury deliberated for hours before reaching their verdict.
Daybell's first-degree murder convictions and the additional three 'conspiracy to commit murder' charges elevated his sentencing possibilities to the death penalty; a sentence taken off the table for co-conspirator, 50-year-old Lori Vallow, due to insufficient review of evidence.
Daybell received a guilty verdict on all eight of the charges he faced.
asphyxiation in December 2019.
Tammy Daybell died in the Daybell family home in October 2019.  A few weeks later, Chad Daybell married Lori Vallow.  At the time, her children were missing, until Tylee and JJ's bodies were found buried in Chad Daybell's backyard in 2020.
Investigators determined it was Chad Daybell and LoriVallow's dark religious beliefs that fueled the crimes and their desire to have a relationship without anyone getting in the way.
Lori Vallow was convicted in this case last year and sentenced to life in prison in Idaho.
In 2021, Daybell and Vallow were indicted on murder charges and grand theft by deception in the deaths of Vallow’s two youngest children.
They were also charged with insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in connection with Tammy Daybell’s death.
Vallow was convicted last year and received multiple life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole.
After Thursday’s guilty verdict, state District Judge Steven W. Boyce instructed the jury about the capital sentencing phase.
