Some say ChatGPT voice sounds like Scarlett Johansson

There has been much discussion and debate surrounding the voice of the GPT chatbot, with some claiming that it bears a striking resemblance to the renowned actress Scarlett Johansson. The AI-generated voice has garnered attention for its smooth and sultry tones, leading many to draw comparisons to Johansson's own distinctive voice.

While some may argue that the similarity is merely coincidental, others believe that it speaks to the advancements in artificial intelligence technology. The fact that a computer-generated voice can be likened to that of a Hollywood star speaks volumes about the capabilities of modern AI systems.

In a post on the social media platform X Monday, OpenAI said it is "working to pause" Sky — the name of one of five voices that ChatGPT users can chose to speak with. The company said it had "heard questions" about how it selects the lifelike audio options available for its flagship artificial intelligence chatbot, particularly Sky, and wanted to address them.

OpenAI was also quick to debunk the internet's theories about Johansson in an accompanying blog post detailing how ChatGPT's voices were chosen.

OpenAI removed the heavily promoted voice option from ChatGPT on Monday following a widespread reaction to the flirtatious, feminine voice. The company had used the voice, which it calls “Sky”, during its widely publicized event last week debuting the capabilities of the new ChatGPT-4o artificial intelligence model. Researchers talked with the AI assistant to show off Sky’s personable and responsive affectations, which users and members of the media immediately compared to Johansson’s AI companion character in the 2013 Spike Jonze film Her.

Sam Altman in September 2023 about the company hiring her to provide the voice for ChatGPT 4.0. She said she declined for “personal reasons.”

Some users lamented the company's decision to temporarily disable Sky, calling it "the best" or their "favorite" voice. It remains unclear why, if the voice was sampled from a paid actor, the company felt it necessary to take it down. OpenAI did not indicate when the voice will become available again.
