After a remarkable 40-year career at the BBC, Huw Edwards has announced his resignation. Edwards, who is known for his authoritative and calm demeanor as a news presenter, has been a fixture in British households for decades. His departure marks the end of an era in British journalism.

His departure comes nine months after his wife said he had been admitted to hospital with "serious mental health issues".

His wife Vicky Flind, who confirmed his identity as the person at the centre of the allegations after weeks of speculation, said Edwards had as a result suffered serious mental health issues. The 61-year-old father of five, who lives in London, has in the past talked about his depression.

Edwards has not made any public statement since he was named as the BBC presenter at the centre of the allegations.

The veteran news anchor was named in a statement by his wife, in which it was said he was experiencing “serious mental health issues” and, after the controversy emerged, had received inpatient hospital care after experiencing a “serious episode”. She said he would “respond to the stories that have been published when he was well enough to do so”.

Edwards had been the face of the pubcaster’s news broadcasting after steadily rising up the ranks since joining the broadcaster in 1984.

He hosted the BBC’s coverage of many landmark royal events, including the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the funeral of Prince Philip, the death and state funeral of Elizabeth II and the coronation of Charles III and Camilla. He was also among the BBC’s best-paid TV hosts.
