Birmingham Airport, chaos ensued as flights were disrupted due to a security incident. Passengers were left stranded, unsure of when they would be able to reach their destinations. All passengers and crew were evacuated and specialist officers including the dog unit searched the plane, West Midlands Police said.
Aer Lingus said the undeclared item on their regional flight from Birmingham to Belfast was not a security risk and their teams were "working to accommodate impacted passengers".
A Birmingham Airport spokesperson added the aircraft landed safely and "all customers due to travel should make their way to the airport and check in as normal".
Several flights at the airport were delayed by more than two hours, according to departure updates on the airport's website.
The flight, which is understood to be EI3647, had been due to depart at 3.10pm but was delayed for 40 minutes. Just an hour into its journey to Belfast, it returned to the airport with the passengers and staff escorted from the aircraft.
West Midlands Railway have also said that trains between Birmingham New Street and Coventry have also been suspended while emergency services attend the incidents. Services are currently at a standstill until further notice.
“All passengers and crew disembarked safely.
“Customers are advised to check with their airline, or on the Birmingham Airport website, before checking in due to potential delays.”

The Independent said an aircraft from the Irish airline departed from Birmingham this afternoon but returned due to the “security incident”.
The newspaper said that footage shared on social media shows several emergency vehicles on the runway, with some flights delayed as a result of the incident.
