Bayer Leverkusen has finally clinched their first-ever Bundesliga title. The team's journey to the top has been a long and arduous one, filled with heartbreak and disappointment. But this season, they have shown resilience and determination, never giving up on their dream of lifting the coveted trophy.
Led by their talented coach and a squad of skilled players, Bayer Leverkusen has dominated the league with their attacking style of play and solid defense. Their hard work and dedication have paid off, as they now stand proudly at the top of the Bundesliga table.
Bayern Munich - with just 15 points left to play for.
It is a remarkable achievement by former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Alonso, who took charge in October 2022 with the club second bottom of the table.
Leverkusen's triumph ended Bayern's stranglehold on the league after 11 title wins in a row.
Leverkusen left nothing to chance and sealed their title win at the first opportunity with Florian Wirtz bagging a hat trick in a win that stretched their unbeaten run across all competitions to a remarkable 43 games this season.
“I cannot describe this,” Germany international Wirtz said. “I personally can still not realise this has happened. I will need a few moments in the changing room to understand what we have achieved.
Real Madrid and Bayern, joined Leverkusen in October 2022 with the side 17th in the table after just one win from their first eight matches of the season.
In what is his first managerial role, Alonso’s impressive work at Leverkusen made him the target of some of Europe’s biggest teams, including his former clubs Liverpool and Bayern.
Alonso has already put that speculation to rest, however, confirming last month that he had decided to stay with Leverkusen next season. The 42-year-old said he has “much more to do” before his work at the club is complete.
When Alonso, 42, was appointed coach in October 2022, the club were struggling near the foot of the Bundesliga table.
"It is a big success for the club," he said. "The first time is special for everyone. We can say we were part of this big day for Bayer Leverkusen. It feels great."
Xhaka, who captains Leverkusen, said it was "very, very difficult to find the right words".
