Papa John's decision to shut down 43 of its UK restaurants has sent shockwaves through the fast-food industry. The full list of closures includes locations in major cities such as London, Manchester, and Birmingham. This move comes as a surprise to many loyal customers who have enjoyed Papa John's signature pizzas for years.
The company cited financial difficulties and changing consumer preferences as the main reasons for the closures. With competition from other pizza chains on the rise, Papa John's has struggled to maintain its market share in recent years.
The group had previously said it planned “strategic closures” to free up money for investment and improve profitability at its remaining UK sites.
It has now identified 43 restaurants as “underperforming locations that are no longer financially viable”.
UK, Chris Phylactou, said: “Our priority is our team members, who will be fully supported throughout this process.
