Richard Lewis at the age of 76. Known for his unique blend of self-deprecating humor and raw honesty, Lewis was a trailblazer in the stand-up comedy scene. His iconic performances on stage and screen endeared him to audiences around the world, earning him a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim.

Lewis' impact on the comedy world cannot be overstated. His influence can be seen in countless comedians who have followed in his footsteps, drawing inspiration from his fearless approach to tackling personal struggles and insecurities through humor. Beyond his comedic talents, Lewis was also a beloved actor, appearing in numerous films and television shows throughout his career.

Mr. Lewis was among the best-known names in a generation of comedians who came of age during the 1970s and ’80s, marked by a world-weary, sarcastic wit that mapped well onto the urban malaise in which many of them plied their trade.

New York nightclubs, he became a regular on late-night talk shows, favored as much for his tight routine as for his casual, open affability as an interviewee. He appeared on “Late Night With David Letterman” 48 times.

Lewis, 76, died at his home in Los Angeles after he had a heart attack Tuesday night, according to his publicist, Jeff Abraham.

Lewis revealed in April that he had been living with Parkinson's disease.

Joyce Lapinsky, Lewis’ wife, "thanks everyone for all the love, friendship and support and asks for privacy at this time," Abraham said in a statement.

"Through the years I learned who Richard really was and the gifts he gave," Hines said. "Yes, he was the comedian I fell in love with, but he was also one of the most loving people I know. He would take time to tell the people he loved what they meant to him —especially in recent years. In between takes on Curb, he would tell me how special I was to him and how much he loved me. To be loved by Richard Lewis. A true gift."

Music legend Ringo Starr posted a message on social media sending his love to Lewis's wife. "God bless Richard Lewis. We will all miss you, man. Love to Joyce. Peace and love," Starr wrote. In a 2009 interview, Lewis said he met his wife through the former Beatles drummer.
