George Floyd killer stabbed in prison

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of George Floyd's murder, was seriously injured in a prison stabbing Friday, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the incident said.

Chauvin was being held at the medium-security Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, when the incident took place, the source said.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons would not confirm the victim of an attack at that facility on Friday is Derek Chauvin, but it offered other details in a statement, including that the victim was hospitalized.

The assault took place about 12:30 p.m., the bureau of prisons said, and "responding employees initiated life-saving measures for one incarcerated individual."

"Responding employees isolated and contained the incident and at no time was the public in danger," the bureau said.

“Responding employees initiated life-saving measures for one incarcerated individual,” and that person was transferred to a hospital for treatment, the bureau’s statement said. “No employees were injured during the incident,” the statement said.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, whose office prosecuted Chauvin in the George Floyd case, was notified that Chauvin was stabbed and is in stable condition, his office told CNN early Saturday.

“I am sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence,” Ellison said in a release from his office. “He was duly convicted of his crimes and, like any incarcerated individual, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence.”

Chauvin was assaulted at the medium-security prison while serving two concurrent sentences in Floyd’s murder.

George Floyd's death, during the height of the pandemic, spurred nationwide and global protests over police brutality and racism.

Chauvin was found guilty on three counts in April 2021: Second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He was sentenced to 22 ½ years in prison in June 2021.

In June 2022, Chauvin was sentenced to 21 years in prison on federal civil rights charges in the death of Floyd. He had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges but in December 2021, he pleaded guilty to violating Floyd's civil rights and admitted that he kept his knee on Floyd's neck even after he became unresponsive.

The Supreme Court denied Chauvin's appeal on Monday of his second-degree murder charge after his lawyer claimed he had not received a fair trial.
