Nebraska (5-7, 3-6) 13-10 on Friday at Memorial Stadium.
Marshall Meeder, the backup kicker called upon after starter Drew Stevens’ adverse first half, hit a 38-yard field goal as time expired to win the game.
Iowa defensive lineman and Cedar Rapids native Ethan Hurkett made the game-changing interception near midfield with less than a minute remaining.
Iowa running back Leshon Williams then had a 22-yard gain on the first play of the drive to put the Hawkeyes in realistic field goal range.
The tone was set early on with Iowa grinding out a 12-play drive that only gained 37 yards. Nebraska fumbled the subsequent punt, giving the Hawkeyes a red zone opportunity. Iowa couldn’t score a touchdown, but a 25-yard field goal was negated by a delay of game penalty.
Brian Ferentz won’t be returning as offensive coordinator in 2024.
Iowa and Nebraska eventually traded touchdowns and looked as if they could threaten the over-under. But in the third quarter, the two teams settled back into offensive ineptitude with several drives ending with punts.
Nebraska a bowl game appearance.
The Cornhuskers are 5-6 overall (3-5 Big Ten) with a bowl game on the line in this matchup. It has a great deal on the line: They would love to be bowl-eligible in Matt Rhule’s first season as the head coach.
Iowa pulled out a 13-10 win after a wild, mistake-filled ending. The Hawkeyes had two field goals blocked and managed just 57 yards and two first downs in the second half. The teams combined to commit four turnovers, including interceptions by each team on the game's final two drives, with the score tied 10-10.
With overtime looking likely, the Hawkeyes picked off Nebraska quarterback Chubba Purdy with 15 seconds left and got into field goal position on a 22-yard run by Leshon Williams. Iowa backup kicker Marshall Meeder, who was attempting his first field goal for the Hawkeyes, was true from 38 yards in the 13-10 win.
