Steelers fire offensive coordinator Matt Canada

Sport by : (PRESSBEE) -

Mike Tomlin made a nearly unprecedented change in the history of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization when he fired offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

In the nearly two months since the 24-point loss to the Houston Texans, there were some changes, to be sure, but none with greater risk or potential reward.

Less than three weeks ago, Canada moved from the booth to the sideline to call plays, a move that precipitated two of the Steelers' better offensive performances of the season. There were first-drive points, a ground-game surge and two nail-biter wins.

Mike Sullivan and running backs coach Eddie Faulkner will share the coordinator duties in the wake of Canada's firing, NFL Network Insiders Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero reported. Faulkner is expected to take over as interim OC, and Sullivan, who has previous coordinator experience with the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will handle the play-calling.

Tomlin confirmed Tuesday that Faulker and Sullivan would share OC duties and that Canada's firing his call.

"It was mine and mine alone," Tomlin told reporters.

"They should have given him another couple of games, to tell you the truth," fan Kirk French said. "He came out of the booth, came down to the field. He has to get used to his newfound."

"It's time for an upgrade," one fan said. "They can't do any worse than they were doing."

Canada, either permanently or in the interim. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that RB coach Eddie Faulkner will take over Canada's job as offensive coordinator, with QB coach Mike Sullivan handling play-calling duties

Rooney quietly and subtly has exercised plenty of influence over the decisions made in Pittsburgh, at every layer and level of the organization. The franchise’s success under his stewardship makes that acceptable. And many thought it was unacceptable to keep Canada in place as long as he was.

While it remains to be seen whether the post-Canada offense is any better, Steelers fans generally are happy that Canada is gone. If the offense doesn’t improve, however, someone else will quickly become the focal point of the wrath of Steelers Nation.
