Eagles to another victory.
Hurts threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to A.J. Brown, and the defending NFC champions beat the Washington Commanders 38-31 Sunday. Behind their banged-up franchise quarterback, the Eagles improved to 7-1 and showed more evidence they are a Super Bowl contender by rallying from a double-digit deficit.
“We’re just enjoying the journey,” said Hurts, who did not want to talk about how his knee was feeling. “Obviously, there’s one stop we’d like to make in the end, but it’s just a journey. You have to really embrace the process of it."
Commanders with a one-handed snag in corner of the end zone and cornerback Benjamin St-Juste draped over him late in the second quarter. Brown added another score in the third quarter, once again elevating to beat a pair of defenders to the ball. Brown had 0.7 and 0.6 yards of separation on his two TDs, the least on any Eagles receiving touchdown this season, according to Next Gen Stats.
"I'm proud of him as a friend and as a quarterback," said Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts, who finished with four touchdown passes and went 15-of-15 with three scores when targeting Brown and DeVonta Smith. "I'm proud that he's truly invested into winning and putting team first and doing whatever he needs to do in his role to win."
NFL-record 1,964 yards receiving. Coming into Week 8, Brown had 809 receiving yards on the season.
Brown made the record-setting catch at the 11:35 mark of the fourth quarter of their eventual 38-31 win off a 16-yard throw from quarterback Jalen Hurts. Brown finished the game catching all eight of his targets for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
The Commanders are trying to exorcise themselves of the latter, but their demons continue to pop up at times. The Eagles game is the most recent example of that. Howell said after the game that they should have won, and there is some evidence to support that. However, as long as Washington continues to fail at putting together a complete game, their struggles at finishing will persist.
The Commanders have nine games to get it right, the next of which is a road matchup against a struggling New England Patriots team. Theoretically, if Washington plays similar to how it performed in Week 8, they have a good shot at getting one game closer to .500.
