The youngest candidate on Wednesday night’s debate stage didn’t make any friends among his fellow Republican presidential hopefuls, questioning their morality, mocking their promises, and suggesting that he, by virtue of his inexperience in government, was ideally suited to solve a nation’s problems.
Ramaswamy brought a similar brashness to biotech. In 2015, he was a 29-year-old hedge fund manager, fresh out of Yale Law School, lecturing the trillion-dollar pharmaceutical industry on how it was going about the business of drug development all wrong.
Ramaswamy’s remarks were booed by the crowd, and slammed by former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who compared to the entrepreneur to ChatGPT and former President Barack Obama.
The question stared when Fox moderator Martha MacCallum asked: “Do you believe in human behavior causing climate change? Raise your hand if you do.”
It has been a month of wildfire disaster in Hawaii and heavy flooding in California. The Fox News hosts pointed out that the climate crisis is the number one concern for young American voters. Regardless, the youngest candidate on stage ploughed on: “The climate change agenda is a hoax … more people are dying of bad climate change policies than they are of actual climate.”
Chris Christie, the former New Jersey governor who has based his campaign on attacking Trump, was characteristically blunt. Updating his famous 2016 attack on the Florida senator Marco Rubio, who he damned as robotic, he called Ramaswamy “a guy who sounds like ChatGPT”.
Referring to Ramaswamy’s opening statement, an attempt to sell Republicans on his image as an outsider, Christie said: “Last person in one of these debates who stood in the middle of the stage and said ‘What’s a skinny guy with an odd last name doing up here’ was Barack Obama, and I’m afraid we’re dealing with the same type of amateur crusade.”
Brett Baier and Martha MacCallum asked for a show of hands of who, among the eight candidates, believe in climate change.
Some of them sure did act like it sometimes, though. Ramaswamy cast himself as the leader of a “cold cultural civil war” and seemed the distillation of the dangerous extremism of the Trump-era GOP. DeSantis suggested he would order a military invasion in Mexico “on day one" of his presidency. And Tim Scott, a non-factor all night, kept trying to stand between the playground bullies by saying, Can’t we all just get along?
