A sentence for ten years for Tory Lanez for shooting Megan Thee

Lanez shot Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion in the feet during an argument between the pair after a party in 2020.

Tory Lanez was found guilty on three gun-related charges in December and has been held in jail since.

The shooting, which polarised the music world, left Megan Thee Stallion needing surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot.

The LA District Attorney said after the verdict that her fame helped bring attention to the issue of violence against women.

"The fact that she is a successful entertainer has brought an important spotlight on the issue of violence against women," said prosecutor George Gascón.

On Monday, Megan Thee Stallion had testified in court that the shooting had left her devastated. “Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace,” she said in a written statement that was read in court. “Slowly but surely, I’m healing and coming back, but I will never be the same.”

ose Baez, Lanez’s attorney told reporters after court on Monday the rapper maintains his innocence and his incarceration will be detrimental to the non-profit groups and individuals he supports financially. Baez had called for Lanez to be sentenced to a yearlong residential treatment program to deal with alcohol abuse issues.

Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson, had given an emotional statement about his son losing his mother at age 11. “I don’t think anybody ever gets over that. But his music became his outlet.”

“Tragically what Mr Peterson did has changed so many people’s lives. Actions have consequences (and) there are no winners in this case.”

Lawyers for Lanez say they plan to appeal the sentence, though the rapper was previously denied a new trial by judge Herriford in May.

George Gascon said: “Over the past three years, Mr Peterson has engaged in a pattern of conduct that was intended to intimidate Ms Pete and silence her truths from being heard.

“Women, especially black women, are afraid to report crimes like assault because they are too often not believed.
