Justin Gaethje scored arguably the most dynamic and memorable KO win of the year on Saturday night in Salt Lake City in the UFC 291 main event. Gaethje landed a perfectly orchestrated head kick to knock his rival Dustin Poirier out, and even their head-to-head series at 1-1.

After the fight, the two were gracious toward each other. Poirier even tweeted at his rival, complimenting Gaethje on his work.

Even after this savage finish in such a high-stakes bout, Poirier and Gaethje had this respectful exchange ahead of the post-event press conference.

The third-ranked Gaethje (26-4) celebrated his victory by climbing to the top of the Octagon fence and doing a backflip off it. His perfectly timed headshot helped him avenge a loss to Poirier in 2018 when he suffered a fourth-round technical knockout via strikes.

ranked Poirier (29-8) entered the rematch between the two former interim lightweight champions as a minus-152 favorite according to FanDuel. He matched Gaethje blow for blow in the first round before being quickly dispatched in the second. With the victory, Gaethje claimed a BMF belt - the second UFC fighter to be awarded that belt.

The main event delivered perhaps the best knockout of the year so far when Justin Gaethje (25-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) got revenge on Dustin Poirier (29-8 MMA, 21-7 UFC) in their lightweight “BMF” title rematch courtesy of a brutal second-round head kick finish.

There is no doubt in my mind that Gaethje deserves a third crack at the UFC lightweight championship. Gaethje told CBS Sports that he requires ample recovery time from his gruelling training camp. That lines up nicely with the time it'll take Makhachev and Oliveira to schedule another fight after their rematch at UFC 294 in October. UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has called for a second fight with Makhachev, but he should instead focus on a deserving challenger in his own division, Ilia Topuria. The only thing that could complicate Gaethje's timeline is if Oliveira beats Makhachev and the UFC books an immediate trilogy. There wouldn't be a clear opponent for Gaethje in that scenario unless he waits for the trilogy to wrap. But for now, it's gold or bust for "The Highlight."
