Opelika, Ala.: Re “Bravest did rights thing” (July 11): In his “Letter From a Birmingham Jail,” Martin Luther King Jr. said Birmingham, also known as Bombingham, was plagued by more unsolved bombings to Black homes and churches than any city in the nation — terror tactics designed to enforce Birmingham’s rigid segregation, to terrorize Blacks and intimidate them from fighting for their freedom. The Birmingham movement had stagnated, media interest was waning — then wham, the children marched, injecting the campaign with life. Their courage incensed Birmingham Public Safety Commissioner Eugene “Bull” Connor.
