Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter 77th wedding anniversary at home in Plains, Georgia

Rosalynn Carter are celebrating 77 years of love and marriage Friday.

Georgia town of Plains, exchanged vows with a woman he'd met and fell in love with years earlier. Little did they both know that their marriage would become the longest of any presidential couple.

Carter's condition but has said they both have enjoyed time with each other and a stream of family members, along with occasional visits from close friends, in recent months.

pair wed in 1946 while Mrs. Carter was in college and Mr. Carter was home from the U.S. Naval Academy, their love story started about a year prior, when Mr. Carter's younger sister set him up with Eleanor Rosalynn Smith, a family friend. 

After their first date, Mr. Carter came home and told his mother, "She's the girl I want to marry."

During their second diamond anniversary celebration, Rosalynn recounted how she didn’t care for dating young men while growing up and never thought she’d get married.

The Carters moved often when Mr. Carter was in the Navy and their children were all born in different states: John William in Virginia, James Earl III in Hawaii, Donnel Jeffrey in Connecticut and Amy Lynn in Georgia, where the family is originally from and returned after Mr. Carter's service. 

They are the longest-married presidential couple in U.S. history.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, the longest-married presidential couple in history, are joyfully commemorating another wedding anniversary. Exactly 77 years ago Friday, the Carters exchanged vows and embarked on a lifelong journey together.

The couple is observing this special occasion at their residence in Plains, Georgia, although both are facing significant health struggles.

In the face of adversity, the Carters continue to demonstrate the profound strength and resilience that have characterized their remarkable journey together.
