On a chilly day in late 1986, thousands of protesters gathered on the streets of Alma-Ata, then the capital of Soviet Kazakhstan. They were mostly young, and mostly ethnic Kazakh. And they all had one demand: a basic say in the political direction of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, which was still a part of the Soviet Union. The protesters had reason to believe they’d be successful. Just a year earlier, a new figure had risen in the Kremlin. Mikhail Gorbachev, who died on Tuesday at the age of 91, had recently ascended as the new Soviet premier. He’d pledged a pair of new policies. The first was a turn toward openness (glasnost), which would address the Soviet Union’s historic crimes.
