A really, really long time ago, there were tolls on the four East River bridges: It was 111 years and 24 days ago, on July 18, 1911, that the city last collected money from cars (and horses) using the grand crossings. That final day of tolls before Mayor William Gaynor made them “free” the next day, the fee was a dime. When tolls return next year with congestion pricing, the price will be closer to 10 bucks.
