Jim Thorpe is back in the news. Last week, the International Olympic Committee declared him the sole winner of the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Olympics. Thorpe, a Native American who rose to fame during an era when racism was widespread, was stripped of his gold medals in 1913 when it was learned that he had violated his amateur athletic status by playing minor league baseball for pay.
