Faced with a dire need for more affordable housing as well as a glut of empty hotel rooms, Gov. Hochul signed a new law last month that will make it easier to convert New York’s hotels into homes. An elegant solution to two pressing problems, converting a hotel into permanent housing is much cheaper (and quicker) than building an entirely new structure from the ground up. Living in a revamped hotel also offers residents much more privacy and security than staying at a congregate shelter.
