Miley Cyrus Makes Shocking Statement About Her Siblings

For Miley Cyrus, the most painful part of her public reinvention in 2013 wasn't the media scrutiny or industry backlash—it was watching her own family, especially her siblings, suffer because of it.

"There was even a time where my brother and sister didn't want to go to school because of how humiliated they were to be related to me," Cyrus, 32, revealed during a vulnerable conversation on the Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky podcast. "I remember my brother even saying at one point, 'I don't judge you, but you could understand how hard it is for me to go to school and for you to be my sister.'"

In addition to Miley, Cyrus' father, Billy Ray Cyrus and ex-wife, Tish Cyrus, share son Braison and daughter Noah. Tish also shares two children, Brandi and Trace, with her first husband, Baxter Neal Helson, while Billy Ray has a son, Christopher, from his previous relationship with Kristin Luckey.

The "Flowers" singer said the shame she felt over her siblings' experience cut deeper than anything else she endured in the wake of her controversial transformation.

"My 2013 is your 1998, because that was the time that I got, just hit so hard. And I was so embarrassed," Cyrus told host Monica Lewinsky, drawing a parallel between her own public shaming and Lewinsky's infamous experience at the White House in the late '90s.

That year marked a major turning point for the former Hannah Montana star, thanks in large part to the release of her provocative album Bangerz, which left behind her Disney image, and made headlines for her performances, fashion choices, and openness around sexuality. But it came at a cost—in both her romantic relationships and her relationships with her family.

"If I kept dressing or acting a certain way, my relationships fell apart," Cyrus said. "No one wanted to date me because they didn't want to be with a woman—that sexual expression part wasn't for them, it was like, shared with the world."

She continued, "It was really hard for me to go home and see my dad and look him in the eyes and not feel super embarrassed. My grandmother was like my best—my grandmother is my best friend. She's dead, but she's still my best friend. And I was like, 'Oh God, this is gonna kill her.'"

Calling visits home during that time "mortifying," Cyrus told Lewinsky, 51, that she began to erase some of the shame felt after going to therapy, specifically EDMR, a form of trauma treatment known as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

"It changed me," she said. "I feel like it kind of deleted the folder of my mind—the guilt and shame folder. So, I haven't really dealt with that for probably about four years, but up until I did that EDMR, I had a lot guilt about how hard it would've been to be my sibling or my parent, and how embarrassing and all those things."

Cyrus said the backlash from fans and the public at large was also intense, with many parents who once viewed her as a wholesome role model for their kids suddenly turning on her.

"It's like the babysitter went rogue. I was like a babysitter for America's children," she explained. "You put them in front of the screen, you know if they're watching my show they're gonna be good, I'm not gonna say anything inappropriate, you feel safe with them spending time with me. And that's when people felt like I wasn't a safe place for their kids anymore."

She even recalled a petition going around to have her banned from television, something she saw as an attempt to sabotage her career at a time when much of her income was still linked to her Disney past.

Now, over a decade later, Cyrus says she's found peace—and credits her latest album, Something Beautiful, for helping her heal.

"This album is really about healing," she said. "I've talked about it a lot—this album has healed me in many ways, but it really is about healing. And sometimes, that can be in the simplest or the deepest of ways."
