‘Tanking is a disgrace’ – ESPN host suggests NFL adopt NBA lottery system amid controversy

Too bad, so sad.

That was the prevailing sentiment by ESPN’s Mike Greenberg on Tuesday’s episode of Get Up!

After the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA draft lottery with just a 1.8 per cent chance, Greeny did not feel compelled to feel sorry for the Charlotte Hornets, Utah Jazz, and Washington Wizards, who all had the highest odds of taking home the first overall pick at 14.5 per cent.

They were the three worst teams in the league, yet ended up with the fourth, fifth and sixth pick.

And you know who doesn’t feel bad about their luck?

    Mike Greenberg.

That’s because the long-time ESPN host believes teams should not be rewarded for losing, more specifically for tanking and trying to be bad.

“The Utah Jazz got the fifth pick last night,” Greenberg began.

“That means that the team with the worst record has now not selected first overall in seven straight seasons, coinciding with the start of the new lottery format.

“So when Adam Silver changed around, tweaked a few things there, he did it and he came on the show and talked about it, because he recognizes, as should every sports fan, tanking is a scourge.

“Tanking is a disgrace. Tanking runs contrary to literally everything sports is designed to be.

“Incentivizing losing is the worst mistake any sport can possibly make, any sports league can make. And as a result, I think it is great news.

“People say, ‘Oh, this isn’t working because the worst teams aren’t getting the pick.’

“Shut up! That’s exactly the wrong way to look at it. This way, win games! Go out there and win games and see what happens.”

Greeny even took it a step further, suggesting the NFL adopt the NBA’s lottery system.

“And you know what should happen?” Greenberg asked.

“The NFL should add this. Every sport should add this.

“The lottery is a brilliant idea and I would absolutely be in favor of the NFL going to some sort of draft lottery, so you stop with the tanking, which is the worst thing in sports.”

Not all tanking is created equally.

Tanking in the NBA is a whole lot easier to do than in the NFL.

It’s hard to tank in the NFL. In fact, it’s nearly impossible.

In the NBA on the other hand, teams openly and actively tank all the time.

However, as Greeny noted, it hasn’t worked out for the worst teams in the league over recent years.

In the last seven seasons, the team with the worst record in the league has not won the draft lottery.

The NFL will assuredly never adopt the lottery system, but it is a fun exercise to think about.
