COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The number of bars in the United States dedicated to women’s sports is on the rise. From Phoenix to Austin, there will be more than a dozen open across the country before the year is over. Now, there are signs that the first women’s sports bar in Columbus could be taking shape.
This women’s sports bar boom coincides with a surge in interest in women’s college and professional sports, and in the near future we could have one in Columbus called Raise the Bar.
“I think the idea comes from wanting a place to go and watch women's sports games,” said Raise the Bar founder Amy Cooper.
Sean Zawadzki nets stoppage time equalizer to give Crew 2-2 draw with PhiladelphiaCooper said she often finds herself walking into a bar asking to watch a women’s game and gets shut down.
“Just generally not feeling welcome to be who we are and watch what we want to watch,” she said.
Cooper is a lifelong athlete and Columbus firefighter. Over the years, she’s done her fair share of playing sports, coaching and being involved with rec leagues.
“This community is so committed to women's sports," Cooper said. "I mean, the city is, the county is, the Columbus Sports Commission is. They're bringing the NCAA back here in 2027. We've got the Columbus Fury here. What are we missing? We're missing a place to gather, especially for those away games.”

“There's nothing like watching sports at the bar with your friends, high-fiving your favorite female player and just getting behind those teams that are in your local communities,” Chelsea ‘CJ’ Johnson, the coach and owner of the Columbus Chaos football team, said.
Some female athletes said they’ve seen viewership increase in recent years. A lot of credit goes to athletes like Cailitn Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers for raising the profiles of women’s college basketball while the USA women's soccer team and countless Olympians from gymnast Simone Biles to Pickerington Olympic medalist Annette Echikunwoke have risen their sports' profile and women's sports as a whole.
“I mean, from basketball to track and field, women's sports are moving," Johnson said. "I mean, they're growing leaps and bounds. I mean, let's take, for instance, the young Olympian from Pickerington, right? Silver medalist in track and field. Amazing. Women's sports is on the rise. And if you don't believe it, just watch."
While not an official bar just yet, Cooper does host watch parties for women’s sports. Attendees said the atmosphere is unmatched.

"It's not just women who watch women's sports. Everyone watches women's sports. I think, for new fans of the game, it's also going to be a great, approachable atmosphere to come watch it in.”
Cooper is looking for a location to officially open Raise the Bar. More information can be found here.
