Florida is believed to be the most likely landing spot for former Texas wide receiver Johntay Cook, according to a prediction by On3 on Tuesday.
The former 5-star recruit out of DeSoto, Texas, arrived at Austin with big expectations as part of the 2023 class. He was the 29th-ranked overall player in the 247Sports composing rankings in the 2023 class, but things didn’t work out for Cook at his home state school and he left the program in early November.
On3’s Pete Nakos is projecting Florida to land Cook’s signature:

— On3 (@On3sports) December 24, 2024Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed that Cook was moving on from his program on Nov. 7, calling the departure a mutual decision.
“We have nothing but respect for he and his family,” Sarkisian said. “We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
That future just might be in Gainesville, if On3’s prediction is correct. The sophomore had minimal production for the Longhorns this fall before leaving the program, catching just 8 passes for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Ironically, his stat line was almost identical in his freshman season in 2023, as Cook caught only 8 passes for 136 yards without finding the end zone.
Texas had success this season without getting what it expected from Cook, as the Longhorns are prepping for their College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup against Arizona State on New Year’s Day. Meanwhile, Cook could be joining a Florida program that surged down the stretch this fall, capped by a bowl victory over Tulane to finish 8-5.
