Although Paul Goldschmidt’s reign of terror with the Cardinals effectively ended last season, when his production fell way off the map (100 wRC+, 1.1 WAR), I will nonetheless be happy to see him out of the NL Central. He’s reportedly signing with the Yankees, who keep making moves after losing Juan Soto across town.
Paul Goldschmidt Signs with Yankees
A dozen reports are out there now, each announcing a one-year, $12.5 million agreement between Paul Goldschmidt and the New York Yankees. Goldschmidt will play first base in New York, replacing Anthony Rizzo, while more or less ensuring that Cody Bellinger (freshly traded to NY by the Cubs) will stick in the outfield. Or who knows, maybe they’ll even split some time, with Goldschmidt sitting against tough righties.
Paul Goldschmidt’s 2024 Splits:
vsLHP: 134 wRC+vsRHP: 88 wRC+
I’m sure they’re hoping he just bounces all the way back (or likely, something closer to the 122 wRC+ he posted in 2023), but I don’t think I’d quite count on that. Steamer is projecting Goldschmidt for a 111 wRC+ and 23 homers.
There’s no real impact here for the Cubs, as (1) Goldschmidt was never returning to St. Louis, (2) the Cubs are not in the market for a first baseman, and (3) the Cody Bellinger trade has already gone through. With that said, the first base market is clearly moving, with Christian Walker signing yesterday and Paul Goldschmidt going today. I wonder what this means for Pete Alonso. Will he be another Scott Boras client that wades DEEP into the postseason before signing, or will his deal come through soon?
Since losing out on Juan Soto, the Yankees have raided the NL Central: Trading for closer Devin Williams (Brewers), trading for Cody Bellinger (Cubs), trading for Fernando Cruz and Alex Jackson (Reds), and now signing Paul Goldschmidt (Cardinals). Oh yeah, and they tried (but failed) to get Nolan Arenado from the Cardinals for Marcus Stroman! They just need a Pirate to complete their hand.
