Judge issues $1M bond for two suspects in Catawba County shooting, denies bond for others ...Middle East

NEWTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – On Monday, four of the alleged shooters at the Catawba County house party on June 1 appeared in court to face additional charges of attempted murder.

Izaiah Mitchell, Toland Huff Junior, Ke’Andre Mack and Zachary Bates all appeared before a Catawba County District Court judge to set or not set bond. All four are now facing 10 additional counts of attempted murder.

They were already charged with one count each last week.

The judge denied bond Monday for Mitchell and Huff because they already face charges for other violent crimes. Mack and Bates received a bond of $1 million.

The prosecution pushed for no bond for anyone – but the defense claims Mack and Bates did not have the criminal history of the other two.

Kendra Mack is Ke’Andre Mack’s mother. She was upset with how high the bond was set but said this is where she needs to lean on her faith.

“My son made a choice to do what he does, and it was not right, and we all know it wasn’t right, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to stand beside my child,” Kendra said. “I’m sorry I apologize for my son’s decisions and his actions. He shall suffer the consequences.”

In court, prosecutors claimed this attack was planned and gang-related. Mack allegedly did not run away and confessed to his actions. Bates, we’re told, had a motivation to increase his standing in the gang.

Maj. Aaron Turk from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office met with reporters after all four suspects appeared before the judge.

“I’m worried if we name that gang, which is a national gang, it is a criminal enterprise that would heighten their desire and intent to further engage in violence,” Turk said. “We remain committed to protecting our communities, to public safety, and we are doing everything we can to that end.”

We’re told more charges will come with time – and soon, the sheriff’s office will determine who fired the bullet that killed 58-year-old Shawn Hood. All four suspects are set to be indicted on June 23.
