The Qualcomm Foundation on Tuesday gifted $1 million to Father Joe’s Villages to prevent homelessness in San Diego.
It is the single largest gift from a corporation in Father Joe’s history and earned the foundation the designation as the nonprofit’s 75th anniversary Visionary Corporate Partner.
“More families and individuals thriving in San Diego means a healthier economy. I am grateful to the Qualcomm Foundation for this bold, milestone gift, which arrives as we celebrate 75 years of service,” said Deacon Jim Vargas, CEO of Father Joe’s Villages. “With the help of organizations like the Qualcomm Foundation, our collective impact will positively change the lives of San Diego’s most vulnerable.”
The organization was established in 1950 as St. Mary of the Wayside Chapel, later merging with its associated thrift shop to become the St. Vincent de Paul Center in 1964. In 1982, Father Joe Carroll was assigned by San Diego Bishop Leo T. Maher to head the organization.
In 2015, four years after Carroll’s retirement, the organization was rebranded as Father Joe’s Villages.
Qualcomm is also marking a milestone, having been founded in 1985.
“We are honored to support Father Joe’s Villages, an organization that has been serving and uplifting the San Diego community for 75 years,” said Cristiano Amon, president and CEO of Qualcomm. “Qualcomm is also celebrating an anniversary this year – our 40th – and we have been grateful to call San Diego our home since our founding.
In 2024, Father Joe’s said it served 11,516 people and provided 275,908 shelter nights; officials there helped 340 of those people find secure, permanent housing.
